My Interview With Dr. Phil

Family, Faith, and the Future of America

Few voices are as familiar as that of Dr. Phil. Last week at our Thrive Leadership Conference, Ray Johnston and I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Phil regarding his new book, We’ve Got Issues.

It’s always interesting to meet people whom you have watched for most of your life. I’ll be honest, when I first heard about interviewing Dr. Phil, I was uncertain. There are aspects of his shtick that isn’t my favorite. It’s fine, just not my style. However, I also recognize he’s a brilliant marketing person and has a show to sell.

But in sitting beside him, those differences faded away and I saw a man who is clearly smart, funny, and brilliant at communicating ideas to others. Listen to this interview on Change the Odds The Podcast. (Listen HERE on Spotify.)

While I agree with most of what Dr. Phil says, here is my biggest disagreement—I dislike the war language when it comes to faith and family. I know it is popular with his audience and probably plays well in Texas, but I don’t find the language useful (or Biblical).

Yet, I agree with his basic premise—when family and faith decline, so does culture. And we all pay a price when that happens.

So take a listen to the interview on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or Podbean (links above). Much of what he says is a practical application of what I say in Stay In Your Lane. We can’t control this culture, but we can influence it. And no one can doubt that Phil is working hard to leverage his influence.
