What Do You Want in Marriage?

Step 1 of Designing the Marriage You Want

I love helping people with marriage because we have far more control over our romantic relationships than nearly anything else in life. There may not be an area in life in which we have more control and yet often experience such poor results.

This primarily happens because most people never recognize the agency they have over their marriage. While one person can only influence the relationship, both parties have the combined power to dictate the outcome they experience.

This is power, and it’s a power that is often untapped. (If you missed last week’s article on this topic, read it HERE.)

Wednesday night I kicked off a new marriage study with over 500 people in attendance. I always love first nights because, without fail, there are new people in the room and they often send me a message the next day. Sure enough, on Thursday, the email and texts began to roll in. The messages are always the same story—we didn’t think there was hope, we heard you, and now we think we have a chance.

The process is one of agency. They recognize some of their decisions (or apathy) led to the outcomes they are currently experiencing. Yet instead of allowing that to cause hopelessness, they see it as an opportunity. If you are causing some bad outcomes, a change in action can create some good outcomes.

Their marriages aren’t saved, but they have a chance once the couple takes ownership.

This is what I want for you. Whether your marriage is stronger than it’s ever been or just hanging on by a thread, there is a simple process to design the marriage you want.

I’m yet to meet a couple who regrets hearing about it. And it’s a process you can start today.
